Choosing a fireproof safe

Back to articles

In businesses, a good filing system is a must in ensuring information searching is completed efficiently. It also allows you to keep track of all records, so that you’ll notice any missing files quicker. The best way to protect these records in the unfortunate event of a fire is to purchase a fireproof file cabinet.

Choosing the right fireproof file cabinet for your needs is important- you need to figure out the required capacity of the cabinet (for now and the near future). You also need to see if the cabinet can physically fit within the allocated office space.

A second consideration for choosing the right fireproof file cabinet is deciding what document type you intend to file away, so that you choose the correct drawer size for it. I.e. a legal size document requires a different drawer size (8.5-14 inch drawer) than those for letter size documents (8.5-11 inch drawer)- so make sure your documents will fit! Otherwise,  trying to cram big files in a drawer that’s too small will result in file damage.

From a technical point of view, your fireproof file cabinet should have sturdy steel walls and thick doors. Ensure that it isn’t just made of standard thin metal that’ll melt in a fire. A genuine fireproof file cabinet should be able to withstand temperatures of up to 1700 degrees Fahrenheit for at least an hour.

Try to read reviews (there are plenty online) on the different products before you purchase them. Also, check that the online retailer you buy from is genuine- you can read reviews on them too!

Other products that will also keep your records organised and safe in a fire are fire document safes and fire cupboards. Take a look at our great range of fireproof products- with the lowest online prices around, why go anywhere else?
