Data Protection for businesses

Back to articles

All businesses are now facing tougher penalties if they breach data protection. Since April 2010, businesses can incur a penalty up to £500,000 for failure to implement effective data protection policies. The Information Commissioners Office will investigate whether or not the company is negligent and if they took reasonable actions to prevent this.

This stricter legislation has led to more businesses being exposed in the media for poor data protection, mainly in the form of leaked or lost data. Businesses are now looking for a range of data protection solutions, from electronic forms, such as spyware protection, firewalls and anti-virus software, to tangible protection such as lockable data safes, locakable filing cabinets and shredders.

Becoming victims of data security breaches can lead to disastrous consequences. Duplo International’s marketing manager, Peter Jolly, says that apart from the immediate effects of ID fraud, “forgery, credit card fraud, con schemes and corporate espionage”, there potentially could be “bad publicity, loss of customers, lawsuits and fines”. Particular industries that need to take care of their large amount of important paperwork include: law enforcement, government agencies, insurance providers, hospitals, doctors’ offices and banks.

Having a good management system for documents in place is helpful towards preventing data leaks. For example, sensitive documents should be stored in a separate section or room with restricted access. It’s also important to train staff to use the system and forms of protection- informing them of the dangers of bad document protection and how to keep documents safe. One way to ensure that the practices are continually used is to stick signs up around recycling bins reminding workers to check whether or not the documents should be thrown away.

If you have sensitive documents that definitely need storing away, TheSafeSupermarket.com has an extensive range of security safes and security boxes, ideal for any office. At guaranteed low prices, see what savings you could make today!
