Is your safe fit for purpose?

Back to articles

Buying a safe is a big decision to make, the decisions you make when purchasing will have a direct impact on the level of security your chosen solution provides.   There are many different options available out there – we have compiled this mini guide to help you out when considering your purchase.

The first decision has to be “what do you want to protect?”   Is it cash , jewellery electronic data or a mixture?  Certain safes offer better protection than others. For example a fireproof data safe will have been tested to ensure that it keeps the contents  below 52 degrees for the maximum period as this is the temperature at which data corrupts.  If you are looking to secure your jewlery the heat resistance may not be your primary concern – but high security may well be.

High security safes are generally rated for their insurance value. The amount an insurance company will cover you for if valuables are left in a safe overnight is known in the industry as their “cash rating”.  The actual amount of cover can vary between insurance companies and locations and may be different to the safe manufacturer’s recommended insurance rating.  As a general rule, this rating is multiplies by a factor of ten for jewellery.
