First Direct Security not up to scratch...

Back to blogs

If, like me, you're one of the millions of First Direct customers in the UK, you may have been surprised to get a number of texts from the bank as part of your normal statement updates.

The service is generally fantastic, informing you of your debit-card funded indiscretions on a daily basis, however this morning's raft of texts may have got you jumping out of bed with shock. You see, due to a mess-up at their data centre, texts of other people's balances were sent out to many people.

Through my initial pre-coffee bleary eyes, it seemed I'd spent over £3000 yesterday, that's one hell of a restaurant tab!

First Direct said there had been a 'problem'.

This shows that one of the most secure banks in the world can have issues and if it can happen to them, it can happen to you.

I am always amazed by the lack of security people give data both in businesses and at home. Data is fast becoming the most valuable thing people own!
