Protecting Your Valuables from Burglars

Back to blogs

Whether you have old heirlooms that have been handed down through your family for generations or have new items such as jewellery that is expensive, a safe can secure these items to protect them against theft. What type of safe you choose will depend upon several different factors. The class of the safe will be one aspect that determines the resistance to the type of tools used as well as the length of the attack.

Limited, Moderate or High Protection

One type of safe which is a Class TL-15 offers a limited amount of security for the items you have stored inside. This includes the use of tools to open the safe. The type of tools typically used to gain entry to a safe are:

picking tools
electrical tools
mechanical tools
carbide drills
grinding points

This classification of the safe is for periods of attack for 15, 30 and 60 minutes when these tools are used. How long the safe can withstand the attack is part of the consideration of choosing a certain classification.

A Class TL-30 is a safe that works on a combination lock. This does help to provide a bit more protection than a limited amount. A safe of this classification will withstand about 30 minutes worth of abuse from the tools mentioned above as well as power saws and cutting wheels. A safe with a Class TL-46 is another type of combination locked protection against burglars that will resist for about 40 minutes. This one is just a little better than the TL-30.

A Class TRTL-30 will protect your valuables from intruders or burglars and is considered a high protection safe. The amount of time it will resist abuse is about 30 minutes. This includes electrical tools and hand tools. In addition to all the typical tools that would be used to gain entrance to this safe, it will also hold up to torches including welding and cutting torches. Another classification of safe is the Class TRTL-60 with the only difference being that it will withstand this type of tampering for 60 minutes.

If you are looking for the safe that will resist practically all the methods used to gain entry, a Class TXTL-60 can even hold up to high powered explosives such as nitro-glycerine. This would definitely be the classification of safe you would want to purchase if your valuables are not in a bank safe deposit box.

If you have valuable jewellery, keep a good amount of cash in your home or are a company with important documents that might be of interest to the competition you will definitely need to buy the best safe you can buy. The sentimental value or the monetary value of some items cannot be replaced even though you may have them insured. The only way you are going to keep the items the safest possible in your home or business is to purchase the best safe you can find.

Remember once these items have been stolen the chances are not very likely that you will ever see these items again. Protecting your valuables with a safe that is rated as high as you can possibly work into your budget is the best way of ensuring they stay where they belong - in your safe.
