The importance of having a waterproof safe or filing cabinet

Back to blogs

Fire can be devastating to a business, especially if that business also keeps files or or media that are easily damaged by heat. However what most of us don't realise is that water can be even worse. If your business isn't in an area already at risk from flooding you may dismiss the need to water protect your documents. But consider this, what is the first thing that people fight a normal fire with, water. If a fire starts in your building then if you have a sprinkler system it will switch on and whilst this may put out your fire it could be just as destructive to paper or media.

Once the fire service arrive they will also use water to put out fires at your premises, only a lot more of it and under high pressure. This can easily destroy records and penetrate normal cabinets and storage.

Below is a video showing how a Sentry Safe Fire File stands up to water damage compared to a standard model.

Really useful information on safes here. I'm looking for a data safe to protect our backup tapes (currently left in my desk draw overnight) so that we're better protected in the new year. Thanks for the information - now i know how well tested these Sentry Safes are they'll be top of my list!
