Should I change the combination of my safe?

If the safe is set as the manufacturer’s default combination or if you think somebody else may know it, then we would certainly recommend changing it.

Normal rules apply when choosing a combination – for example try to avoid birthdays, anniversaries etc. a random combination is always best. It is worth bearing in mind that you should avoid choosing a last digit from the forbidden zone. Sounds slightly sci-fi, but if you have been issued with a forbidden zone number list (not all safes have this so don’t worry if you have not been given a zone), then please adhere to it as it can cause jammed locks if not.

Should I keep the spare safe key, or bypass key in the safe?

No, you would have no way of getting to it if you lost the master! Mind you, you’d be surprised how many people do this …

What if I only have one key?

If you only have one copy of the key and you lose it, try getting in touch with the manufacturer to see if they can issue you with a replacement. Unfortunately many locksmiths will not cut a ‘copy key’ for security reasons (they can’t tell if you are planning on using the copy to burgle the safe), so the manufacturer is the best option if you do lose your only copy of the key.

Why is my safe bleeping or flashing at me?

If there is bleeping or flashing it is likely an electronic or digital safe. Beeping and flashing usually means it is running out of battery – try and replace as soon as possible.
